About Wildwood Park in Fort Wayne, IN
West of downtown Fort Wayne, on the way toward Jefferson Pointe, lies Wildwood Park — a neighborhood built around winding, tree-shaded streets and a striking collection of early-20th-century homes. Today it stands as one of Fort Wayne’s most architecturally significant historic districts, prized for both its landscape design and its residential charm.
Built for the Automobile Age
Wildwood Park’s story begins in 1916, when developers marketed the area as a rural retreat just beyond the reach of the city’s other residential neighborhoods. Promotional literature of the era described it poetically as “the country dressed up in her best, and brought to town.” Unlike earlier streetcar-oriented suburbs, Wildwood Park was designed as an “automobile suburb” — a neighborhood that assumed residents would drive to reach downtown or the Country Club to the west, rather than rely on rail lines.
The neighborhood was the work of Wildwood Builders, led by developer Lee J. Ninde, a nationally recognized proponent of city planning who also served as the first president of the Fort Wayne Plan Commission. Ninde partnered with his wife, architect Joel Roberts Ninde — believed to be Indiana’s first woman architect — along with fellow architect Grace Crosby, to design many of the neighborhood’s homes.
A Landscape Architect’s Vision
The neighborhood’s defining feature is its layout, designed between 1914 and 1916 by Boston landscape architect Arthur Shurcliff. Working with a large, open parcel of rolling terrain, Shurcliff was able to lay out generous lots and wide, curving streets that made full use of the property’s natural topography and existing tree cover. It was one of the earliest developments in the region to introduce curvilinear street design, deed restrictions, and an architectural control committee — features that would go on to influence residential planning throughout northeastern Indiana.
Shurcliff’s Wildwood Park design was among his few commissions outside New England. He went on to even greater fame a decade later, serving as chief landscape architect for the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia — arguably the most important commission of his career. He also designed prominent landscapes in Boston, including the Charles River Esplanade and Franklin Park Zoo.
Architecture and Legacy
Wildwood Park’s homes span a range of popular early-20th-century styles, including Craftsman, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, and later Ranch-style construction, reflecting a development period that stretched from about 1914 into the 1950s and 60s. The district today includes roughly 190 contributing buildings across 160 acres, roughly bounded by Freeman Street, Illinois Road, West Jefferson and Portage Boulevards, and Lindenwood and Ardmore Avenues.
In recognition of its historical and architectural significance, Wildwood Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 2013, following a nomination effort by ARCH, Inc. on behalf of the Wildwood Park Neighborhood Association.
With its rolling streets, century-old trees, and homes designed by some of the era’s most influential architects, Wildwood Park remains one of Fort Wayne’s most picturesque and historically rich neighborhoods.
